AT&T 993 Corded 2-Line Speakerphone

Reviews of AT&T 993 Corded 2-Line Speakerphone

1.) Rugged SOHO Phone with Good Feature Set and Reasonable Price
Reviewed by: Louis Sander Pittsburgh, PA
Rating:
I bought this phone to replace a somewhat similar AT&T 962 that had served me well for five years or so. My application is in a home office that has two lines--one for home and one for office. Important features to me are a speakerphone, caller ID, call waiting caller ID, and a dozen or more dedicated buttons for speed dialing. This phone has all those features, plus additional ones like headset capability that I probably will never use.

The phone looks and feels like a professional telephone. The controls are easy to see and identify, and easy to find and press with your fingers. The 4-line backlit LCD display is easy to see, even in a lightened or darkened room. A 9-volt battery lets the phone operate even during a power outage.

Many of the features are controlled by a menu on the LCD display. The controls and procedures for this are much improved over my older AT&T phone. The manual provides fairly easy-to-follow instructions for the fairly complicated setups that many of the features require.

I'm a bit concerned about the provenance and future of the phone, though, since this model doesn't even have an entry on the manufacturer's web site.

Putting that aside, it seems like quite a good phone for the money, and it's a considerably-refined improvement over its similarly-featured predecessor.

2.) Much better than expected

I bought this phone because I wanted a corded phone with both speakerphone and headset capabilities, and this was one of the few out there.

This phone is better than I expected in speaker and receiver sound quality, as well as in key response. The LED is clear in dark and light environments, controls are convenient and logically placed, and I'm pleased to almost baffled by the key response. I am a very fast button pusher, and often keys don't respond as quickly as I press them. This phone is so responsive it almost feels as though it's responding before I press. Freaky. Anyway, good phone!

3.) A Good Deal

I had a second phone line installed for my Home Office, but still wanted access to my Home line for personal calls. With limited desk space, a two-line phone seemed to be the answer, and it was! After a good deal of research, I settled on the AT&T 993 corded 2-line phone with speakerphone.

This phone has so many features, it will take a good while to learn how to use them, but I am not under any pressure to do so. I can use what I need now and implement the others as time allows.

I especially like the clarity, which is most important as I have a hearing disability. Next is the caller ID, which is large and very clear, and stores the last 99 call numbers and associated information, which you can then process in a number of ways, such as call-back, put the number in your directory, erase etc. Also, you can put up to twenty of these, or other numbers on your "Instant Call" list, accessed by a "one-touch" button on the front of the phone.

The instruction manual that comes with the phone is written in English (only), by some one who is proficient in both the language and the phone. It is extremely detailed and easy to follow.

Price-wise, the phone, purchased on Amazon, is a bargain. It has more value for the money than I have seen elsewhere.

I would highly recommend this telephone !

4.) Great 2 line Phone

The At&T 993 is a great phone and good buy at Amazon. The dial pad has large, easy to use contoured keys. The receiver is comfortable. It features independent set up for each line. Choices include separate volume control & an option to set a "primary" line. There are separate in coming call indicator lights that light up and stay on until the call history for that line have been reviewed (a simple scroll down touch of the button). This feature works even when the incoming call were not answered. Time saver: quick dial a number in call history. To use it, scroll through the calling history for the desired ID/number, then touch enter, and it will dial the number for you. The call history remains unless deleted or excess of storage. The connection cord can be plugged to a wall jack directly behind the phone or to another location. I purchased this phone for these features: 2 line, speaker, hold, caller ID/call waiting, & AC powered. Other features includes speed dial, auto redial, conference calling, mute, 9v backup (battery not included), head set ready, and much much more. It is a large phone measuring about 7 3/4" wide x 7 3/4" long x 3 1/2" depth (without depth of wall phone jack). It can be use for both wall or desk use. We have used our new phone for about 1 month. I would purchase this product again.

After having several different phones, this one fills the bill. The Caller-ID works fine, the speaker-phone sounds good on this end and to the person I am talking to, and it has a headset jack which makes it easy to talk and type on the computer. The only thing it might need would be an Answering system. However, for those with telco voicemail it even has an indicator for new voicemail.

6.) Exactly what I needed - and it works!

Most of my initial thoughts about these phones are in relation to the absence of 'bugs' which I have experienced in similar two-line SOHO phones from GE in the past. I just purchased two ATT993's to replace two GE units of similar price/features. The GE units had numerous glitches in the use of their features, and in the past weeks, I have been very, very happy not to have experienced anything with these 993's that I would describe as a glitch.

Quite simply; The two units we have work as expected. Unfortunately, it seems that's not always something you can expect with two-line phones in this price range. The sound quality and volume ranges seem perfectly acceptable with handset, speaker and headset.

A few features which implementation of I have enjoyed include the ability to turn off the voice mail notification system on each line, individually. This avoids having information being displayed that simply is not needed. I like the options to be able to choose exactly how the phone selects a default line when you lift the handset or press the headset/speaker buttons, depending on what state each line is in (offline, ringing, in-use, on hold)

The menus and call lists are not difficult to navigate, but of course every unit has its own way of doing things there. I don't like units that have rotating 'wheels' for scrolling, as it often seems there is a 'lag' with it, making it extremely difficult to use. Viewing call logs is easy, as is adding a call record to the phone's phone book. That's a feature I've never used on a phone before, as it seemed more trouble than it was worth. I still may not use it, but it is nice at least to know that I can store numbers from caller ID into a somewhat more permanent place with just a couple button presses. The speed-dial also works well (and that's something I do use for about 10 numbers I call almost daily)

Each line has its own, pre-set ring tone, with one line at a slightly higher pitch than the other. Volume can be adjusted individually per-line, which was nice. Mostly, I'm just tickled pink because on one of our previous GE phones, the ringer seemed to choose randomly if it would work at all!

My only nitpick is a minor one, not nearly worthy of reducing the rating; The data port is set only to use line 2, and that cannot be changed. Our 2nd line really only exists for rollover of incoming calls when the main line is busy, and I had used the data port on my previous 2-line desk phone for my DECT6.0 cordless. That phone had a switch, so in a pinch I could even switch the cordless between lines very conveniently.

Actually, I just realized I have a second nitpick; It does not seem that the LCD can be adjusted contrast-wise, which is really an adjustment for your particular viewing angle. I have not had a problem with either of our units though, and to be honest, I'm not sure the 'contrast' setting has been terrible useful on similar units in the past, as it frequently seems like you need to manually adjust your angle a bit anyway, because who looks at the phone from the exact same angle all the time?

7.) Batteries not needed!
Reviewed by: C. Matlock USA
Rating:
Works great! I've had bad luck with phones and after reading reviews of this one, I was ready to be disappointed. One main reasons I purchased it, is because I liked the fact that it comes with a power unit you plug into the wall, so it doesn't require batteries. The display works perfectly, the volume level is just fine. I like it. And the buttons - I love how easy it is to dial a number. I've had no problems with any of the features. I'm very happy with it and I like having something I can use even if the power goes out. I'd recommended it to others and would definitely buy another one.

8.) Nearly perfect 2 line phone
Reviewed by: Silverlight Geek MA USA
Rating:
The 993 is nearly perfect if you want a straight forward 2 line phone that is easy to program, use, dial, and that is reasonably priced.

Pro's: Very nice design, tilted display, easy to read, easy to set up and program, keys are well laid out and distinctive and large, excellent use of color, zero confusion, total set up time under 5 minutes, automatic call timer, distinctive rings, you can set which line is primary, you can turn on or off call waiting light, call light, etc. Has data port and port for headset.

Con's: no associated portable phones (no intercom), while you can vary the volume of each phone line, the rings are distinct but not settable. Display is tilted, not tilt-able. Takes 9V battery (not included) rather than 2 AA. As I say, the cons are not much.

Overall, I'd rate this 4.9. The key is how long it lasts with heavy use... time will tell, but since it is AT&T I'm optimistic.

I just received the AT&T 993 from Amazon. This phone is such a bargain for the price Amazon charges, I would buy three more if only the phone was available in white. (My wife would beat me if I bought any more black phones.) I just bought a Cortelco 2-Line WHITE phone for almost two and a half times as much. The AT&T is so much better, it's amazing. The Cortelco speaker phone is almost useless and the "back lit" display is barely illuminated. The AT&T does everything right and costs 40% as much. If you need a 2-line phone and you don't mind black, buy the 993. You won't be sorry.

I recently purchased 3 phones, the at&t 993, a panasonic kxts600, and panasonic kxts105 which has no caller id. They were all rated quite good, and are somewhat similar desk phones. The 993 comes with a dc power supply, and has 2 lines. The panasonics are battery powered. In my opinion the 993 is in a whole different league than the panasonics, as well as other phones that I own. It has far better sound quality, much faster operation, it has a larger easier to read screen, and it is a bit heavier so it just feels better. It does not have that annoying hollow sound that you get with the cheaper units. It is by far my phone of choice, a good value, and I just ordered another. Good day.

I just purchased this phone for a small business I'm starting out of my home office. After reading several reviews on the AT&T 993, I wasn't too sure what to expect since some people left very bad reviews. I've only had this phone for about 6 hours but so far I'm very pleased with it. Since most of my phone calls are answered through my speakerphone, I was very pleased to discover that the speakerphone on this particular model has exceptional quality. I can stand about 3 or 4 feet away from the phone and it sounds like I'm holding the phone up to my ear!!! It also has other great features that any small business could use including 2 lines, ability to put your customer on hold, caller id in case your customer doesn't leave a message, and 3-way conference calls. I would definitely recommend this phone to anybody who wants a professional-quality telephone without the high price.

17.) Like having an office phone at home
Reviewed by: PhotoGraphics Arizona
Rating:
I have a home office and spend a LOT of time on the phone, so much so that I actually wear out headsets and have to replace them every few months. Having a "professional" quality phone is extremely important to me.

The AT&T 993 looks and works as close to an office phone as you can get. People I call tell me they could tell an immediate difference in voice quality. That's important.

But it is the user-interface that make me like this phone more than any other I have used. The control buttons are logically placed and work solidly. While I rarely use the handset, I often switch from headset to speakerphone and back and AT&T has made that process logical and convenient. You can preset if you want the phone to default to handset, headset or speakerphone when you answer, and for me I often wear the headset most of the day and I can answer by touching only one button. By the way, having a headset jack on the phone was a #1 priority for me, and AT&T wisely placed it on the lower right so the cord doesn't get in the way.

The one-touch direct dial buttons are logical and have a fairly sophisticated method of chaining numbers so I can call virtually anyone programmed in with one touch. The way additional numbers are stored in a directory works well, too. You can vary the speed at which you can scroll through the names to suit your personal preference.

The phone has more than adequete volume for both incomming and outgoing calls and it is very easy to adjust while you are on a call. The speakerphone is very high quality and does not have a "tunnel effect".

The various indicator lights give you a lot of information about line status, missed calls and voicemail messages.

What are the cons? I would have preferred to have a dedicated voicemail button rather than have to dedicate a direct-dial button to voicemail. Also, the LCD display can either be turned on or turned off. The display is hard to see with it off, but if you turn it on it stays on all the time. It would make more sense to have it light when a call is coming in or when you push any button. It would also be nice to be able to adjust the brightness.

I agree with the other reviewers who mention the "beep" the keys make when you are dialing. You can't turn the beep off or adjust its volume. Personally I like having a beep of some type to assure me that I pressed the key properly (I'm often dialing by touch rather than looking) but I would like it to be a very subtle sound.

The "look" of the phone is entirely the owner's personal taste, but for me it looks like a quality piece of office equipment. That might have a slight influence for some people like me who want their home office environment to look professional.

The documentation is excellent, far more detailed than you would expect for a phone of this price, and crystal clear in how setup and operation instructions.

This is a phone that I highly recommend as a top value.

This phone replaced a very old similar-style AT&T phone in our house that decided it wasn't going to play nice with our new Verizon FIOS service (high pitched static). I needed a good quality main phone with speed dial, caller ID and speaker phone for home use. The 993 phone is much better quality than I expected - they make things so cheaply these days so I was surprised. It's a good sturdy phone that's got a good weight to it. It was easy to set up and the manual was easy to follow. I like the big number buttons. Sound quality is good and speaker phone seems to work just fine. Caller ID box is bright and easy to read (you do have to get somewhat close to it). Scrolling through the call history is easy enough. We are using this phone with only ONE LINE even though it is a two line phone - and this wasn't a problem (I checked the online manual first to make sure it would work that way). I've telecommuted for ~7 years now and have a tendency to go through phones. Most home phones just aren't designed to be talked on for 8 hours non-stop (no exaggeration). I have a great cordless phone with a bluetooth headset, but it just can't make it through a full day of 2-3 hour conference calls or 8 hour phone sessions...however this speaker phone works great. The audio quality is as good as any you can buy for home use, the volume goes high enough to deafen you...and the wired headset is great.

This phone has given me further reasons to never go to my actual company provided office, having a functional hands free is essential and my employer is too cheap to buy one to go with the $800 desk phone that I never use.

This turned out to be a great phone. Was easy to figure out after a quick skim of the instructions and you can change pretty much all the settings you'd want to. The speakerphone works so well that I haven't tried a headset. The only time I've had problems with the speakerphone is when the other person has bad cell phone reception or when someone else picks up another phone at our house. Otherwise no one notices I'm on speakerphone. The buttons all work well, even the directional pad which looks a bit cheap. The LCD is easy to read, and there are a lot of useful indicator lights. They did a good job providing buttons for the important tasks and making the unimportant ones menu options.

Minor gripes:
The phone directory is alphabetized only by the first letter, which can cause some confusion.

The new call light lights up even after calls you've answered from this exact phone. That could be made smarter. It'd also be nice if the new call lights were also buttons that you could push to reset them/turn them off.

The one downfall, in my opinion, is you must have the display light turned on at all time to easily see the incoming caller ID. In previous phones I have had, that area will light up when there is an incoming call, not stay lit all the time. I feel like I am wasting energy~~small amount that it might be.
But I would recommend to anyone that is looking for an inexpensive two line phone.

First the good:

+ Able to control which line is auto-selected
+ Speakerphone very clear
+ Headset jack
+ plenty of speed-dial buttons
+ excellent sound quality.

Now the minor annoyances:

- Caller ID display does not hyphenate numbers, you will see 202-5551212
- If a number is in the directory, caller ID does NOT display the directory entry (why??!!)
- The menu navigation is odd, and I often hit the wrong button when trying to use the menus.

2.One touch Speed dials are easy to program.

I like the conference, hold and flash buttoms, all easy in addition to

but that has not been my experience. I use a headset in addition to speaker phone.
The display is large with 2 lines showing both line id's . One touch calling

My experience - this only happens when there are no remembered telephone numbers of recent callers. As long as there is at least one number in memory, the glitch does not show up. So, when deleting the list of recent callers, leave at least one there and you will be fine.

If installed where caller-id is not available, this might be a problem. For, in that case, there is no way of getting recent callers into memory.

Apart from the one glitch, this telephone has performed flawlessly.

im still working out all the functions but so far the speakerphone is terrific.

some of the options are not terribly user friendly so you really do have to read the handbook to figure out a bunch of things. fortunately the handbook is mostly easy to understand.

now my biggest concern is with the battery.
i think it would be really helpful to find out from others if they have experience with how long a battery can keep this telephone working if the electric cord is not plugged in.

i tried using a new radio shack 9 volt battery without plugging in the cord.
and both battery and the phone were not working by morning.
when i plugged the electric back in, the phone worked fine.

the point is, i don't know if it's the battery, OR, if it's the telephone using up internal electricity. which in the latter case would obviously be a detriment if we wanted to use this phone during a black out.

it's still unclear to me if the phone works at all without electricity. though other commenters have said that it does, i have just not seen this yet.
i will try again and return to update as soon as i try another battery and have to unplug the electric again.

AT&T suggested the Energizer battery by the way.

overall the phone is good and has a really clear caller ID .

This is a phone with minor but annoying flaws. Keypad volume can't be adjusted so key actions or auto dialing in the speakerphone mode is annoying loud. Of course, one can dial using the handset, but at the expense of freeing the hands. Some older AT&T models feature dialing tone volume which can be tamed by the speaker volume control
Each line has a single ringer tone and they are almost identical. Why such a primitive design when cell phones today offer a number of musical selections?
There is no ability to manually add a name when an incoming call number (private call) is saved. This is a very useful feature if one has many private callers with similar phone numbers. Speed dial is poorly implemented, not allowing electronic entry of names. As a result, it is not possible to display an incoming call by name if the caller is listed among the speed dial entries.

Clearly AT&T had low expectations for this phone. It is a dated phone and it shows.

6. Battery backup for power failure, but time still has to be reset,
7. Auto busy redial: keeps on dialing every 30 seconds if line is busy (a rare feature),
8. Fairly large footprint, but not too big.

Cons;
1. New call indicator can't be turned off. Even if you answer the call on this phone, indicator still lights. I solved this by putting a small piece of electrical tape over the surface mounted LED on the circuit board for each line.
2. Display backlight is dim,
3. Base isn't angled up far enough. I cut a 1x2" piece of wood to prop up the back of the base so the display can be seen easier.

***** UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL POST *****

The humming was in fact the phone company's problem! I got a 3rd telephone (Cortelco 2720 2 line phone) and talked to a technician there before ordering. He said they make high quality phones, and if I plugged in their phone and heard the same type/level of humming as I heard on my two AT&T 993's, that he was positive it was the phone line or jack etc. I ordered the Cortelco phone, plugged it in, HUMMMMM! I called out the phone technician, and he still said it was the phones. We stripped out everything and were standing outside listening to the lines BEFORE they got to my house...and ALL of the phones hummmed. He said, 'See, it's your phones.' I said there's no way that 3 new phones could hum like that... could the BOX be defective outside the house? THEN, it dawned on him to substitute my 3rd line (fax line only) for one of the two lines going into the phone, and after he did that, it was CRYSTAL CLEAR. He zipped everything up, went down the street somewhere to a phone company box, switched the physical line that ran from there to the phone company, and walla, all of my lines (and THREE phones) are now crystal clear.

'After further review from the officials', all told, I would change my rating to a 4.5 stars, simply because the LCD display is not very good. In the end, I decided to keep and use the Cortelco phone because it has a much more readable display (it lights up with blue background when you press any button and the letters are 50% larger and clearer). There are a few minor advantages that the AT&T993 has over the Cortelco phone, but the speaker phone on the Cortelco is actually slightly better than the 993, and all things considered, with my eye-sight a little weak, I'm going to use the Cortelco. I'm keeping my two AT&T phones however. My wife uses one, and the other we'll put somewhere else in the house.

If you need to have a good, clear LCD display, you'll like the Cortelco.

***** FINISHED WITH UPDATE *****

I researched several phones and this phone was easily the best overall choice when it came to features, functionality, ease-of-use, and cost. I only have two drawbacks:

1) Minor - The LCD background could/should be lit up more. It's a little difficult to see in different light environments.

2) Major - When BOTH lines are connected to the phone (regular land-line POTS lines), when picking up the handset for either line, it has a very noticeable, annoying HUM. When only ONE line is plugged in (doesn't matter which one), there is no hum at all.

I had the phone company come out and test the lines, and they said each line was fine, and they of course blamed the 'cheap' phone. I called AT&T, and of course they blamed the phone company for not testing it on their own (service man's) 2-line phone. I bought TWO of these 993 phones just a couple of weeks ago, and they BOTH have the annoying HUM in rooms that are at opposite ends of the house. When you are talking to somebody with the volume all the way on low, it's noticeable and a litte bothersome...when you turn up the volume at all, it's very annoying.

I typically disconnect the home line when I'm using the phone for business.

Great phone, lowsy hum. Made in China.

I was surprised to see the 992 but NOT the 993 at the website that it says to go for technical support (www.telephones.att.com)

Reviewed by: Alan New York, NY

In my 993, the directory alphabetizes only by the first letter. Within each letter group all is haphazard. According to the AT&T techs at the helpline, the order within each letter is in order that the items are entered. Not too good for adding a directory item later.

Secondly, while the instructions say that each directory name can be sixteen letters (spaces counting as letters), the sixteenth letter is the letter after the one keyed in. For example, if you key in an "f" as your sixteenth letter, a "g" will appear. Again, I checked this by phone with the AT&T helpline and was told that their models do the same thing. (This was after the first tech told me to exchange the phone. I did and the second had the same problem.

Since no one else has mentioned these problems (but the AT&T techs verified both on their models), I wonder if this is a problem with a more recent run of the product.

I have heard better sound using the receiver.

79.) A Disappointment
Reviewed by: Mtn Coyote Denver, CO USA

I've had this phone for several months now, and wish I had gotten a different one.

PROS:
- The speakerphone works well; even full-duplex without significant problems.
- It has a good range of volume adjustments for both the handset and speakerphone.
- The handset cord feels like top quality (but who cares?).
- The auto-redial feature is neat. If it detects a busy signal, it hangs up and then redials in approx. 25 seconds.

CONS:
- When using the handset, I hear my own voice in the receiver. This is rather disconcerting, as no other handset I've ever used does that.
- The action & construction of the keypad buttons feels cheap, like a third-rate bargain basement device.
- When using the keypad to interact with automated systems (e.g. voicemail, PBX menu systems, etc.), I can't hear the first part of the system's audible response. The last keypress seems to "cover up" the first second of the audio. For example, I'll key in my work phone extension and then hear "ter your password" instead of "ENter your password". This makes it harder to interact with automated systems. And the problem occurs whether dialing with the speakerphone or the regular handset.
- Managing the Call history list and redial functions is not very intuitive. I find myself having to actually think how to use the function each time. Given that I'm the kind of guy who can help people use the advanced functions of their cell phones without ever seeing their model before, I'm pretty sure the problem isn't me. ;-)
- Often times I have to hang up and redial the number to make a connection. Somehow the timing of my keypresses confuses the phone network. I've never had this much trouble with dialing a phone before.

80.) Fails the Basics
Reviewed by: J. White
Rating:
I've owned this phone for 8 months now, using it in a home office. I won't disagree with other reviewers that this phone has great features for the money, etc. However, that doesn't matter to me because the phone fails in its fundamental purpose: being a telephone.

The speakerphone is lousy. The mic is overly sensitive to sounds coming from the phone itself (e.g., the conversation you presumably want to hear) and cuts out the speaker so you lose a lot of clarity. You can mitigate this by sticking some tape or a yellow-sticky over the mic (and speaker) but then it makes it hard for people to hear you. You can also mute the phone but that can be a hassle if you're actively participating in the conversation.

The other annoyance is that the number pad can't keep up with my dialing speed. I'll punch in a number, see clearly in the display that it was the correct number, and will be unable to connect. Same with conference call pass codes. You have to type the numbers more slowly for it to keep up. Not sure if there are better options but knowing what I know, I would not buy this phone again.

On the bright side, if you never use a speaker phone, and you're a slow dialer, this might be a great phone for you.

The AT&T customer service person told me the phone is designed for use on regular analog lines. And i should just take it back. Both my lines use the internet (we have the Verizon FIOS Triple Freedom package for phone, high speed internet and TV). One is the Verizon line, and the other uses a vonage device.

I was skeptical of the explanation. The hum would go away momentarily when holding the phone and pressing on it in places, so i thought it might just be a defective phone. I took it back and exchanged it, and the new one is much worse. There is still a hum. But when both lines are plugged in there is a also a loud noise on the vonage line. Since that is the one i use for business, i have to unplug the verizon line to have the vonage line work acceptably, which defeats the purpose of having a two line phone.

The SBC two line phone worked fine on this setup for nearly two years until i started having people complain that i was cutting out. Replacements of the handset cord, and then the handset temporarily fixed the problem. But then i decided just to replace the phone. I never knew getting a new phone would be such a hassle.

I bought this almost a year ago to replace another AT&T model that was giving me problems. Should have known better. It is now not recognizing the numbers I dial, either speed dial or manual. It has shown this symptom all along but so rarely that I didn't think much of it. As of today, this phone is useless to me except to answer calls. I now begin the search for a new 2-line corded phone and it won't be an AT&T.

100.) speakerphone does not work

The speakerphone does not work. I bought two of these last year, sound quality deteriorated over a few months then quit altogether.

Only reason I bought it was for the speakerphone...I am typing this one handed while on phone waiting for a help desk to pick up.

101.) Not worth a dime
Reviewed by: Monica R. Pfister

This phone is a piece of crap. I had to send the first one back to AT&T due to volume control issues, keypad sticking, wrong numbers being dialed when I pressed the right buttons and the display showed the correct number. AT&T sent a replacement and this new one has issues with the headset jack not working properly and keypad sticking again. Tried my headset in another phone and it works fine, so I know it's the phone. So now I'm debating whether to spend another $12 to ship it back or just pitch it and get one not manufactured by AT&T. Also, The contact directory does not sync up with caller ID. I'm very unhappy with this phone.

102.) It has problems . . . who makes good phones anymore?

I purchased this phone for a home business. Callers cannot hear me when I am on speakerphone (although I can hear them fine). The backlighting of the display (where you see caller ID, etc) stopped working early on in the life of the product, and the display itself is muddied and impossible to read without that backlighting. I called AT&T and getting the phone repaired or replaced would have been such a hassle that I never went through with it. They put up a lot of barriers to getting it replaced--the biggest being I would have to send it in on my own dime and that I would have to be without the phone as they had to get the old one back before sending out a new one. That's not how it should work!

103.) I wish I could love this phone
Reviewed by: rosanna Minnesota

I purchased this phone from a well known electronics store. Not only did my headset and speaker phone choose when to and not to work, but whenever I picked up the headset the speaker would make a loud buzzing noise that would last 5 seconds or so. I may have had a defective phone, but while choosing a replacement I realized that there are two other returned phones of the same make/model on the shelf discounted.

104.) One of the Worst Phones I've Had
Reviewed by: Jack Puglis Parsippany, NJ
Rating:
I've used AT&T phones before and had decent luck with them, but this AT&T 993 was the company's worst offering yet.

The most maddening thing about it was that when I dialed using the keypad, not all of the dialed digits would produce an outgoing tone. Yet, in cases where I had the exact same number stored in the autodial memory, the number would dial just fine. I finally began dialing a number, hanging up immediately and hitting "redial," since then all tones would be produced properly and my call would go through.

This was clearly a problem that needed to be repaired, which I would have done, but other problems with the phone annoyed me so much that I simply replaced it. Listening volume could not be adjusted very easily, so that I would sometimes get loud callers who I couldn't turn down enough and faint callers who I couldn't turn up enough.

The display is completely unreadable in some lighting conditions, but even in the best of circumstances is "muddy." I altered the contrast settings up and down, but the LCD is simply not sharp. This sometimes rendered caller ID useless, since I couldn't read it.

Less specific is the fact that I simply found this phone an awkwardly-designed device and irritating to use. Rather than paying attention to human engineering, it seemed that an unwilling designer slapped something together to get the project off his desk.

Since I couldn't dial reliably, sometimes had problems with a too-high or too-low sound volume and usually couldn't read the display very well, the device became a chore to use. I need to make a number of calls each day, so the simple act of using the phone became a chore. I don't like to sound emotional, but I came to hate this phone (read: did a lot of cursing and swearing at it).

105.) Lemon Phone

The phone is great, but I have to give it one star because it appears this model has an issue with the 9 key. It sticks but not really sticking. It is a known issue if you google this model. It is very hard to use the phone if you cannot use the number 9. When you press 9, there is a long sound. It is not a key issue as it happens with programmed numbers as well.

106.) ATT 993
Reviewed by: gt

You have to program area codes you are getting calls from, otherwise the phone puts 1 in front of the number the tel. co. sends. You can only program 4 but even if unlimited, who would sit there and program all possible area codes you might get a call from???!!!!The result is it makes it harder to identify the number and useless if you want to dial it!

The new call light indicator lights up even if you answered the call from that phone!

It might just be mine but the handset mike goes mute for no apparent reason. To fix it you must unplug the power and take the battery off for 5-10 minutes!!!

DO NOT BUY

107.) Good potential, but TWO strike and your OUT!

Ordered two phones formy business a little over a year ago. Two weeks after warranty expired the speaker stopped working altogether (couldn'y hear it ring). I ordered a new ATT 993 and put the defective phone in the warehouse for outbound call only. New phone now decides when the speaker is going to work. Sometimes it rings, other times not. Most annoying is getting a dial tone and making a call and the ringing thru to the dialed party and any part of thier convarsation goes silent. NOT RECOMMENDED!

108.) Good Phone, poor customer service from AT&T
Reviewed by: all saint CT, USA

I love this phone. It has all the features I wanted and works great with my headset. One problem though - The "9" button sticks 90% of the time. When pressed, it emits this very long tone. It isn't a matter of cleaning the phone - this happens on programmed numbers too. I use this phone for business so went to AT&T to get help or exchange it. They have no real humans via phone support and have sent me the same form letter email saying that I could "take advantage of" their exchange program by packaging up my phone mailing it back to them (paying my own postage), then wait 2-3 weeks for a new phone to arrive. Really? I paid full price for a brand new working phone and they want me to invest even more? Seriously, that has to be the worst form of customer support I've seen in a while. I conduct business from this phone - how am I supposed to go without a phone for 3 weeks? I gave them a chance to resolve before I posted my feedback here...they sent the same form letter again. Nice. I guess this is the drawback of ordering online - even amazon doesn't have an exchange program. I'll live with the defect because I just don't have the time to invest in sending this one back. If you order this phone or any from AT&T, keep your fingers crossed...

109.) Poor product

Actually I don't know if it is a POOR product, or I've been cheated.
I brought back the product, I live in Caracas, Venezuela. The phone never worked properly, could get no sound, I took to a specialist repair store, they refused to accept it even for revision; I was told that this is a REFURBISHED item, what I know is that I bought a new aparatus, and I got something different. It seem that the amplifier malfunctions. As I said I don't know who to blame, the manufacturer or the seller, and am sorry I lost my money.
