After my home phone broke, I was looking for a cheap replacement. Like most households now are not using their home phones, I still keep a home phone just in case, and talk to the occasional telemarketer that get passed the Do Not Call list(j/k) Well I was looking for reliable, caller ID, high frequency that won't interfere with my wireless network, Back lit, and most importantly Cheap. I have purchased V-Tech before and had no problems. At first I was skeptical but I have come to give some cheaper brands a try. It is easy to set up. The buttons are nice and big, Caller ID back lighting is great, enough to see when it rings in the dark. It does not interfere with my wireless network which is important cause we have 4-6 computers/laptops connected. The sound is clear and crisp. You cannot go wrong with this phone and its price.

My 15 year old Radio Shack cordless died so I got this one VTech CS5111 as a replacement. I also have 4 other cordless telephones in use throughout the home and external buildings. The Vtech is equal to or better than all of them. I found the audio normal and the phone comfortable to my ear. It is very simple to operate. I would certainly buy one again.

3.) Perfect with Magic Jack!
Reviewed by: Gggirlgeek "Mel" Seattle, WA

This phone is perfect for me. I use magic jack as my home phone and forward calls to my cell when I'm out. Now I pay $10/month for both!

Anyway, back to the V-tech. Great sound, great caller ID. Totally comfortable to talk on for a long time. I can keep it on my shoulder just fine too. The directory and caller ID functions work great once you read the manual and figure it out; not the most obvious set of functions. The volume and clarity are great though; no static.

With magic jack the phone's caller ID works perfectly, you just have to make sure to plug the magic jack into a SELF POWERED usb hub (with a power cord) rather than straight into your computer, then the caller ID kicks in. Also you can use your computer speakers and microphone as the speaker-phone. (Also make sure the phone is set to touch tone or it won't dial out with magic jack.)

I like the fact that it doesn't pick up a call when I take it off the cradle. I am always looking at the caller ID before I answer and I don't want to be afraid to touch my phone while squinting down at it.

I also like the option of adding new handsets later.

4.) Good Value

I don't ask for much from a phone except easy set-up, good sound quality, and durability. The V-Tech fits those categories very well and the price is incredibly low. I had this same phone for 5 years and the battery went. A new battery costs as much as the phone so I just got a new phone instead. Another thing I like is the shape of this phone. I looked at several phones in the $50-$100 range but they looked like cell phones. Apparently most people have tiny hands and fingers to press thos little buttons all cluttered together. If you can do without all the frills, this is the phone for you.

I was looking for a simple portable phone to put on the desk in my den, without all the bells and whistles...reasonably priced...in a slim line design, not wanting it to take up too much room. Haven't had it all that long, but it works just fine. No problems with it. I like the sleek look, better choice of color design. It sits in a silver base and is attractive as well as having good voice and range quality. The price was right. I would recommend this product, and I find I have good luck with Vtech products.

I bought this phone because this phone new costs the same as a replacement battery for my last cordless phone and in past experience, once a battery wears out, the entire phone would soon follow. The call sound quality is better than my last GE/Thomson cordless phone and nearly as good as the corded phones in my apt. The GE was not as good but usable. Since all I really wanted was a cordless phone that worked well for making calls, this has met my expectations very well. With that being said, if you're looking for a phone loaded in features (speakerphone, answering machine, multiple handsets) this will not work out for you.

Recently, I got a Nettalk TK6000 (device that competes against MagicJack and Ooma) to make phone calls over the internet. I was looking for a cordless phone to use that would be easy to operate and have decent sound quality.

I checked out two other cordless phones, but decided to use this one. I already had one phone around the house. It was a 5.8ghz Uniden brand that had a built in answering machine. However the phone contained too much static. Then I went and bought a Panasonic Dect 6.0 cordless phone. I loved the features of the Panasonic but had one problem. After making a call for about 1 1/2 hours, the phone gave me a headache. I think from the Dect 6.0 technology (the handset and base of these phones constantly send out tiny microwave pulses of radiaton). So I decided to return the Panasonic and found the Vtech CS5111.

Here's what I like:

- sound quality is good (not crystal clear, but free of static)
- nice ergonomics (properly sized keys, sized to fit ear and mouth well -- unlike small cell phone like ones)
- Wi-FI friendly - won't interfere with wireless networks
- 5.8 Ghz technology (lower technology than the newer Dect 6.0, but I'll pass on the microwave pulses)
- keys are protected with plastic so they won't wear off or get ruined if wet

Here's what I dislike:

- dim backlighting (The box shows bright backlighting but the phone is not. The light is about as bright as
dim lighting of a lcd watch)
- battery indicator (The box shows a constant batter indicator, but in reality that only shows when the battery
is low)
- directory (only holds a total of 20 contacts)
- dialing programmed calls (there's a delay about 20 seconds after programmed dialing and when the called
phone rings)

One other general note about cordless phones. I wished more companies would start using standard sized (AAA or AA)
batteries instead of unique cordless phone batteries specific for that phone. The Panasonic used AAA rechargeable metal hydride batteries. That was a nice touch.

Overall, I'm satisfied with the Vtech CS51111. I feel like Goldilocks. The Uniden had to much static. The Panasonic Dect 6.0 gave me a headache. The Vtech fit just right!

32.) Great Second Phone
Reviewed by: Calamity Jane

Sound quality is fine. An extra volume control button would be more easily accessible if placed on the base, as it is on the handset. The screen lets you see who's calling before you answer - gives name and number. It also shows who called while you were out. The receiver has some weight to it, but the base is very lightweight plastic. It easily gets knocked around on a desk. If it falls, something's bound to break. The base has a "Find Handset" feature that causes a misplaced receiver to beep.

The numbers on the keypad are encased in clear plastic. No worries about the numbers wearing off. The phone has speed dial, but I haven't used it. I don't use the voicemail either. The redial feature is nice. You can increase or decrease the volume off the ringer.

It's a decent phone for the price.

Try Walmart though. I paid $14.99 for mine.

I like the looks of it but can't comment on any of the many features as I just don't use or have a need for them except for keeping the ringer off (but I imagine most phones have that feature these days). Has a good range from the handset and I've talked at length without having to put it back in the "cradle" or whatever to recharge.

Seems to dial slowly after you enter a phone # in and click "talk", but a minor annoyance. Seeing the phone # you dialed should be clearer or brighter but that would be the only downsides. For less than 20 bucks, it gets the job done and doesn't look like cheap junk.

This phone does work, is light in weight, and does look good. Except for the three small buttons on the bottom row, the backlit buttons are large and easy to see and easy to push. Sound quality is not stellar, but is more than adequate.

Two gripes are the dimly lit display that in no way measures up to the brightly lit screen shown on the packaging. Also dialing is slower than other phones I've used, but that's a minor complaint.
In retrospect I wish I'd spent a little more for a phone with a speakerphone feature.

I use my home phone about half as much as my mobile (phone). I recently integrated this home phone into a VOIP system. I've owned two Panasonic cordless phones before this and replaced one because it failed.

I purchased this from a national chain store and it included an additional handset; I put in another room as its home. I bought this because it:

Had no additional answering machine (I don't like all in one devices, I would rather pick and choose).
Had a backlit large caller id display.
Had a message waiting indicator so my VOIP system could turn on the message waiting light.
Was a 5.8 Ghz handset.
Seemed to be a competitive value on price, critical factors considered.

Results:

It is lightweight (I like this aspect) with adequate battery life.
The sound quality is exactly what you would expect for a POT (Plain old telephone).
It has a small footprint so you don't have to allocate a lot of table-top real estate for it.
It will not interfere with your home wireless computer network.
Newer, cheaper baby monitors will absolutely wreck your ability to take calls on this phone. (I suspect it is because they transmit on similar frequencies.)
Considering the above, if I lived in an apartment complex I suspect I wouldn't be 'ok' with using this phone because it doesn't have any privacy features like DECT or 'frequency hopping' built in.

Summary:

If you are looking for a phone that is unobtrusive, functional, and inexpensive that doesn't have a lot of complicated and time-consuming features then this may fit your lifestyle.

Like others' comments, it may not have the most responsive buttons and the durability may be unknown. I've had mine for a year, use it lightly and haven't had any problems.

Not recommended for families with heavy users or people who tend to mash the buttons very hard. Not recommended for use in an apartment complex.

It has no beltclip (with no jack outlet I suppose that's not an issue) And since it only charges forward facing, there's no way to attach a wedge to help you. This phone will be for my long-distance calls so without a way to better wedge it between my head and shoulder and no jack or speakerphone it's a loser. The phone face is also completely flat with no molding so it hurt my ear for just the little bit I used it for.

For extremely brief calls I think it might be just fine. For any other length (ear still kinda hurts and I was on only 1 min) and long calls I'd go with something else.

If you just want to do away with the hassle of a tangled cord get this phone. If you want a phone you can take to the other room or (gasp) outdoors, then get a DECT 6.0 phone, especially if you have a computer with WiFi. You get what you pay for with this phone and if you want a piece of junk not worth $20 then this is the phone for you.

I had great hopes for this phone and as soon as it came, I promptly loaded the battery and charged it. After 36 hours, this still hadn't charged. I did all the trouble-shooting, i.e., switched to another outlet, phone line, etc. I even purchased a new battery, but still no go.

I returned it and got a full refund but I would have preferred a phone.

69.) Terrible voice quality

I purchased this phone for $14.00 from Target - in the store. I wanted something that I could use to replace my older phone that I continually purchase replacement batteries for. I guess this phone makes me sound like I'm in an echo tunnel. I hear some strange sort of sound when I'm on the phone. Don't waste your money.

70.) Very picky speaker
Reviewed by: Eli C. palm desert, ca

I purchased two of these phones as a package, and the earpiece in one was noticeably quieter (even after adjustment). Everything else seemed OK, with one major gripe, again the earpiece - if your ear wasn't positioned over it perfectly, there was an almost 100% loss in volume. This made for some awkward conversations, fumbling to find the right angle.

I checked for wireless phone and saw this item had good rating. When I received it however I found I couldnt even get a dial tone, let alone make a call. The only thing it does is ring when you call the number but you cant talk on it. Then I go to web and see there are lots and lots of complaints about this phone. I had to ask myself, is this even supposed to work?

I tried this phone in two different houses, at two different area codes, and never could get it to work, even after calling V-Tech and following all the troubleshooting procedures. I think if it worked it might be a fine phone for the price. Fortunately I can return it to amazon for a full refund.

74.) Don't buy this phone!

Worked ok for a few weeks, then started whistling/feedback sounds. When a call would come in, you couldn't understand a word that had been recorded. POS!

75.) no answering message, generic or otherwise
Reviewed by: Sharon K. Yntema Ithaca, NY United States

There are two big problems:
1. It is not clear how to activate the answer message at all. When people call in, they say it just rings and rings
2. There is no personalized answering option, although even a generic would be better than nothing.

I'm probably missing something, but I've read the manual a couple of times and can't figure it out.

76.) This phone is junk

I ordered this on the recommendation of a friend. A friend with no taste, it turns out. Sound quality was abominable and the thing kept fading out in my office. I returned it within a week.
