This phone is way beyond good.

It is easy to use, small, light. When you program the date or the directory on
the Phone #1 the #2 gets updated as well. The intercomm feature is very nice,
the speaker sounds really nice and loud. You don't lose signal eventhough you
are very far from the base. The voicemail is very easy to set up and messages
are easy to recall.

I made no mistake by choosing this phone, it is more than I was expecting. If
you buy one of this you won't regret it.

I got this phone set for free using my credit card points. I love it! I like how much smaller the main base is than my previous phone. The clear buttons look cool and it is a light phone. The second base only needs plugged in; no phone jack is required. The built in answering machine works easily and turns off simply if you don't want to use it. When you put directory numbers in one, they are automatically added to the other phone. The other features like an intercom button to call the other phone, find handset button, and phone service voicemail alert are good additions. You are able to add up to 12 phones using just this one base!

I love this phone; easy to program, good range, sounds great and looks cool! It replaces a 7 year old 2.4 Panasonic that served me well, but was getting a little long in the tooth; technology has come a long way in 7 years. When the phone in my garage needs a new battery, I will buy a third handset for this phone-probably cost less then a new battery!

I did not buy it on Amazon (I should have-it's less expensive), but I would recommend it to anyone. Read the manual and all should work well for you!

the phone works wonderfully with more features and better sound quality than you would expect at this price. The only recommended changes are to illuminate the "talk" buttons and add a feature to the answering machine to allow more time to answer the phone than the 4 rings allowed in toll-saver mode. Otherwise, the phone is by far the best thing that you could purchase at this price.

I've owned Panasonic, Uniden and now V-Tech cordless telephones and answering machines. Most recently, a Uniden answering machine malfunctioned and created a nightmare of lost calls that took a technician to trace. The V-Tech offers two handsets, only one of which requires connection to the telephone system. The other has a base connected to an electrical outlet, but it picks up the signal from the answering machine connected to a telephone jack. I love the fact I set up the directory in one telephone and had it available on BOTH telephones with no extra effort. The cordless telephone is nicely shaped and very light in the hand. Controls are intuitive and easy to navigate. The keys are backlit, which is a very nice feature when making calls in the evening or dim light. Sound quality is excellent. I love the fact the answering machine doesn't cut callers off in mid-sentence, as the Uniden often did. After a month of use I am more than satisfied, I'm delighted by this product. I heartily recommend it. For the price, quality and features, it can't be beat!

There's a lot packed into this compact phone/answering system. I've had it about 6 months and just figured out how to see the last 5 calls I made on the phone. I guess it helps to read the user manual thoroughly :) Anyway, I love the extra handset, the speakerphone feature and the range I get. I can take it halfway down the street and it still works. The only drawback is when I use the handsfree feature I have to keep the phone pretty close (less than 2 feet) for anyone to hear me.

Our first cordless multi-handset phones were VTechs (many years ago) but over time they started failing.
So we tried an AT&T phone system which was complicated and didn't last long.
We tried Uniden ... again complicated (each phone had its own directory) .. and then the Directory / Caller Id buttons failed on 2 of our 3 handsets.
So we've returned to VTech. Easy so far ... shared directory is the only way to go. The handsets feel good and we haven't accidentally pushed any buttons while talking on the phone.

Hallelujah --- a phone which actually WORKS as a phone SHOULD WORK!!
Voice is CLEAR. The volume adjuster WORKS. The "keys" are of decent size, read-ability, and nicely backlit. I have adjusted the ring volume so I can hear it in another room --- or simply slip the extra handset into a pocket for easy carrying about. The built in speaker eliminates a number of wires, & saves room & clutter. Though I have not yet utilized all features on this phone, those I have, have been USER FRIENDLY. The direction Booklet -- so far -- is UNDERSTANDABLE!!
WOW !!! Amazing!! A part of this phone is marked as made in Singapore --- NOT China!! --- is that perhaps a factor in why the thing actually does perform so well?? Because of all this, I would especially recommend this phone to elderly folks -- of whom I am one.

Lastly, another big reason I have come to prefer purchasing via Amazon is the efficiency & ease of returning an item I find unsatisfactory. Knowing this takes the anxiety out of purchasing.

PS ~~ I saved over $20 buying via Amazon compared to local retailers.

This cordless works as advertised...it's great. After I set it up and turned it on there was noise, but after going to vtech's support page I used the filter that came with my wireless router and DSL modem. Now the vtech is crystal clear; and the wi-fi still works great too. I've used it everywhere in the house and it's got a good strong clear volume/sound. When it stops raining outside I'll take it out to experiment with distance just for fun, although, I'm really not interested in outdoor use. I already knew it didn't have a headset jack but rated that five also. Panasonic is the only cordless I've found that has a headphone jack, but no way to hang the phone on your belt/pocket or whatever so why bother. The price was right for this basic clear cordless with a digital answering machine. That is what I wanted, and this cordless fills the bill, low thrill. low $$.

I was hesitant to get this one at first since the price was so low compared to other sets that had the same features I was looking for, but after reading the good reviews I took the plunge. So glad I did, I LOVE this phone in every way!

It gets good reception; I can be at a neighbors apartment two floors up and not even hear a crackle, or even in the parking garage below the complex two floors down and only hear a little fuzz on the elevator on the way down. Battery life is awesome, a handset goes for days and days without recharging. I love the speakerphone feature on the handsets, and love the intercom feature even more so that I can just page my fiance if I need something when he is at one of the neighbors apartments.

The answering machine is great, I canceled my voicemail service saving a few bucks a month and already saved what I spent on the phone itself! Whats even cooler is you can check your messages from the handsets, you don't have to go to the base.

The only thing I wish it did was have speakerphone on the base...just in case the handsets batteries died or something, although I don't see this ever being a problem! The base has its own ringer too, but I still can't figure out how to lower the volume on it or turn it off. Small cons though, way way way more pros!

Overall, this phone is great for its price! Highly recommend!

I bought this phone for my Mom, who is in her 80s and has had problems with dizziness, so that she could have multiple portable phones throughout the house. My brother set it up for her, and she was able to use it right away. She loves the speakerphone feature and says the sound quality is excellent. She also liked the digital answering machine with a generic voice. She finds it easy to retrieve messages. She does not have caller ID, a feature I wish she had. She liked the phones so much that I ordered her 3 more handsets so she could have phones in most of the rooms in the house, including the bathroom. I like the fact that she can carry the phone with her in the yard when she's outside, so she is always able to call someone if she feels ill. My brother found it easy to add the new handsets to the base phone's memory. I highly recommend this phone!

I really can't believe such a quality phone setup can be bought for this price w/perks such as intercom, answering machine, and using both phones on same call. Its a no-brainer in my mind especially considering you can buy additional phones for so cheap.

We threw out the last cordless system we had - it was unreliable at best. This system has good sound (with adjustable volume control, which is really nice), and has pretty good quality on the speaker phone. It feels good in the hand, not flimsy, and we have had no problems with it so far. The Caller Id display is big enough to see without my glasses (big plus!), and the adjustable ring signal is loud enough that if I set a handset down on the porch while I'm working in the yard, it actually can be heard. Also, the base has a Voice Mail indicator, which is handy. One of the big plusses for me was that this system does NOT have an integrated answering machine (hard to find one without an answering machine, which is not useful when you have voice mail). We have already added another handset to the system: the expandibility is another nice feature. All in all, I would recommend to anyone.

This is a very nice cordless phone system from Vtech. I got this model to replace a model with which I had become very frustrated. However, I am happy to report that this system has met my expectations which are:

* DECT 6.0 - to avoid interference with wireless internet
* Handset usability
* Easy to use answering machine
* Able to use both handsets on the same call

The call quality from this system is great. My previous system was on the 2.4 GHz frequency, and was always fuzzy. However that's not the case with this Vtech model. The caller on the other end is comes through crisply with ample volume.

On my old system, the "Talk" button was raised such that if you tried to hold the phone with your shoulder, you would almost always hang up on the call. I found this very aggravating, but the Vtech handsets pose no issues here. I find the controls fairly intuitive too. I have not had to consult the detailed user manual in order to do what I want and need to do.

I may be a bit behind the times on this, but this is the first phone system I've had where all setup is done from the handset. Have you ever been frustrated with the buttons on answering machine bases that do different things based on how long you hold them down? This is gone in this system. The handset has an easy to navigate menu system that mimics what I remember from my older Nokia cellphones. Playback can be controlled from the base station, but that is the only thing it does. You can also playback messages from the handset.

The final thing I was looking for might seem a little odd, but you won't notice it until you need it. On my old system, only one handset could be active on a call at any time. That is not the case with this Vtech system.

I don't ask my phone system to do a whole lot, but I do want it to do these things very well. I'm very pleased with this system from Vtech. If your needs are similar to mine, I think you will be too. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below.

It's easy to program, has good reception and lots of cool features. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because in the Philadelphia area where I live, you must enter the area code for local calls. When paging through the missed calls, it doesn't show the area code. So if you try and hit dial from there, it won't work. You have to just memorize the number and manually dial it, assuming what the area code is. This may not be an issue for a lot of people, but it's a pain for us.

The one complaint I have is the phone is a bit slippery. Don't get a great comfy grip on it. Besides that it would have been nice if it had bluetooth capable. i like the phone - great for the price.
i find the handset a bit sensitive as to earpiece placement - if i hold the phone a little too high it becomes inaudible - of course there's an easy fix for that: hold the phone lower... And the quality of the speaker on "speakerphone" mode isn't very good, but again for the price - $40 for 2 phones and answering machine - who's gonna complain for hours? Not me.
The range is adequate, but no better than other phones so if you don't expect it to be you won't suffer disappointments. Sound quality is reported to be good by people talking to me.

I do see how someone with a professional office or primary use may need more features, but you really can't go wrong with this phone if you need something reliable and nice.
A BIG reason for choosing this phone is the DECT 6.0 techonology, this makes your cordless phone safe for Wireless Internet or WiFi in your home as you do not need to worry about Interference issues. There are still cordless phones that do not use DECT and I would not buy one if you have WiFi at home or other wireless products as you may start getting interference.
I believe you can also mount it on the wall or use an attachable base.

Phone and answering system are fine and perform as described. Only complaint is that the back light of the screen is not bright enough or as bright as my Uniden phones. I had an older model Vtech and it had the same problem.

Have been using for less than a month so can't comment on battery life. As far as construction, it seem OK, but only time will really tell if it will hold up.

One other comment, if you also have voice mail as part of your phone service, make certain that the service will pick up only after the Vtech doesn't answer. I originally set the Vtech to pick up after six rings, not realizing that the voice mail was set to get the message after 4 rings. So the voice mail picked up first and the message never got to the Vtech. I had to go online to my phone service and change the number of rings for that system. Now the Vtech answering machine works properly and answers before the voice mail clicks in.

Once I realized the cause of the problem and that it was easily corrected, everything work just as it should.

72.) It's plain and basic but it works.

The phone does what it is supposed to do and the battery life will be great for about a year. Our previous 6219 model now has to sit on the charger all the time. Talk time on the 2-year old model has diminished to about 30-45 minutes and standby time off the base is about 8 hours if you don't touch it. But when they are new, they last a long time. I am disappointed by the lack of a headphone jack and by the lack of a keypad lock. 22-month old children who love to talk to grandmothers on the phone have this nasty habit of pressing the buttons in the exact correct order to make return phone calls to business clients. The redial and talk buttons are a favorite of my youngest daughter, in that order, and that's why this phone base is now nailed to the wall five feet above the floor.

These vtech phones do work fine and you won't be disappointed in them until the batteries lose their mojo. Then you will find, as I did, that it is cheaper to buy a new system than to get replacement batteries for all the handsets. Now I have a primary phone with 3 handsets (one from the previous 6219 set and two from this 6229 set) and a secondary phone I keep by my desk (the old 6219 with the least usable battery). Perfect. And in another year or two we'll buy another primary set and get rid of the oldest. The one we got rid of to use this DECT was the 5.8GHz vtech that looks almost exactly like it but has an inch long antenna sticking out of the top. We owned 2.4GHZ vtech cordless phones before that. Every one seems to last between a year and two years. For the money, it's a good deal. I would rather not spend $140 for a set of phones that might not last much longer than these $40 vtechs.

81.) One major problem nobody mentioned
Reviewed by: A. Barker California
Rating:
Even with all ringers turned off and all volumes turned off, this phone base still makes a LOUD tone whenever someone calls in, even when no message is left or if it is. Vtech customer service said there is nothing they can do to turn it off. And when some drunk called here at 4:21 a.m. the other morning and that loud tone sounded, it woke me up and scared the crap out of me. I had voice mail through AT&T before and NEVER thought my phone rang, so why pay the $9 a month? Well, I get LOTS more calls than I realized now that I have to hear that tone every time someone calls! And I HATE it. Must be sales calls. No message is ever left. Yes, I'm on the Do Not Call Registry. They just ignore that and call anyway. The buttons are hard plastic and my fingers slip off them. And if I don't hold the phone just exactly in the right spot on my ear, I can't hear the people talk. There isn't a "speaker," per se, just ONE small hole to hear the sound through. But I use the phone very seldom, so I'll have to wait to see what the Vtech CEO can do to fix the problem with the tone. Why do men always feel they have to make noise? You know men design these phones. The keys are slippery to push with fingernails, which men do not have, and everything beeps. Sheesh. Nice phone other than that.

As an addendum to my earlier review of this phone, I have heard from an underling to the CEO of Vtech and none of their phones are quiet totally. Once the answering machine comes on, it triggers the tone that cannot be turned off and is audible no matter what you do as soon as the person hangs up. You have to turn off the answering machine to NOT hear that tone. Vtech also makes AT&T phones. They have the same problem.

Overall I was pretty satisfied with the product.

The only reason I give it a lower rating is because to my surprise it didn't have a jack for a headset. If you use it for work, want an ergonomic product so you don't hold a phone with your shoulder or your hand, it's very important.

If you use the phone for longer conversations, be it for business or pleasure, a phone with a headset jack for convenience and health reasons is a must, and this phone doesn't have it.

I called VTech customer service. They were very nice but, they suggested I return phone and pick a different model. I told them that was a poor answer because it is a problem they should address on all there phones. They said they will send me a different AC adapter. They should change the adapter on all the phones. Shame on VTech for masking the issue. By the way there customer service is in the Philippines. Does that supprise anyone. Otherwise phone is ok, so far.

As basic phone this a good choice, but I found it is missing a couple of features that I'm used to so I would be sure that you review the tech specs carefully before you buy. I haven't found any features that are stoppers but you might so just be sure to check. Fow example the ring control does have a good match with me Verizon voice mail so half the time messages go to voice mail and half the time they go to phone. Also, we haven't figured out how to make message play on the phone whille a person is leaving a message. You can play them back after, but you can't screen call unless you are near the base station.

the phone worked great for 10 days. Good features, good sound quality, good price. Then it stopped hanging up. The handsets would turn off but the base would not hang up the line, preventing any calls from coming in or going out. Having a bad experience with Vtech quality in the past I had planned to give them one more chance. They blew their chance and I went back to Panasonic.

89.) Poor quality sound, bad design for wall mounting
Reviewed by: wileykat
Rating:
I had to return this phone for two reasons. Mainly, it made a constant crackling noise as if I were too far away from the base, which I wasn't. The second reason is that I wanted a wall-mount phone, which this says it is. But, from past experience, there is typically some method that allows a desk phone to mount on the wall at a different angle, such as a part that snaps off the back and then reverses position, or just some other way to mount it on an angle. This phone does not have that. It mounts on the wall in the exact same position as it would sit on a desk, as if you just slid the phone up from the desk onto the wall. So, I couldn't see the display unless I walked over to the phone, and slightly leaned up on my toes. This isn't very convenient, especially since I couldn't just glance over at it to check for messages, and it wasn't very attractive looking on the wall. I uploaded a photo to show how the wall mount design looks. It is illustrated in the manual, but I didn't download it and look through that before I bought it.

90.) So-so feature set, poor quality parts and audio
Reviewed by: Jeremy Chadwick Mountain View, CA, US
Rating:
I tried very hard to like this phone. I was going to return it to Amazon almost immediately but decided to stick with it for about a week to be fair. The problems I found frustrating and ultimately unacceptable were (in order of severity):

- Half-duplex voice operation. This was the biggest annoyance of the bunch. When speaking, you can't hear the caller, and vice-versa. Equally as bad, there's a brief delay (~0.5-0.75 seconds) between who speaks and who listens, resulting in portions of missed words and so on,
- AC adapter for base unit emitted hissing, electronic noise (multi-frequency vibration-like noises), and high-pitch squealing. I could hear it over the idle noise of my refrigerator! This was reproducible on any outlet in my home, including outlets on my UPSes which clean up dirty power. It would happen even if the transformer wasn't plugged into the base unit. Oddly enough, the AC adapter for the remote handset charger did not have this problem. I called Vtech to ask for a replacement, and was told to return everything to the place of purchase "until I got a unit that didn't have this problem",
- Interference issues with fluorescent lights -- a scratchy, static-like noise could be heard from the handsets if they were used near or around a fluorescent light. Annoying when trying to use the phone in a kitchen,
- No personalised ringer capability,
- Limited ringer selection (there were 6 or 7, and all but one were obnoxious),
- Base unit lacks battery (all handsets and base unit lose date/time during short (1-2 second) brown-outs),
- Response time of UI was somewhat slow (ex. delays of 1-2 seconds while scrolling through phonebook entries),
- Overall cheap feel of handsets, base unit, and charger; very thin/lightweight plastic, moves easily on a flat surface despite having rubber feet, buttons didn't register if pressed from a slight angle, base unit buttons were rubber while handset buttons were hard plastic, etc.

I should add that many of these problems also happened on the Vtech DS6321-3, indicating (to me) that there are general engineering design hurdles which Vtech hasn't managed to address.

Finally, as a comparison base: I was upgrading from a Uniden TRU8885-2, which I purchased many years ago. It has none of the above faults, but has many of a different kind (some of which are much worse, such as the 20 phonebook entry limit, per-handset phonebooks, and completely bizarre handling of area code comprehension (local vs. local distance)) -- which is why I was looking at getting a Vtech to begin with.

The CS6229-2 did address most of the the shortcomings of my TRU8885-2, but after a week of use the negatives easily outweighed the positives.

I give the product 2 stars rather than 1 because some of the features the phone offers are indeed an improvement over my Uniden, and there are some basic UI design methods which are incredibly user-friendly (no need to read the User Manual!), and the handsets were significantly lighter than my Uniden (due to smaller batteries). Oh, and one footnote: the Vtech batteries are NiMH not NiCad (some consider this a plus, others a minus).

I just bought this phone 2 days ago and set it up for use in my home office. I immediately noticed that whenever I played back messages incoming or out going the speaker rattled noisely.

Also the incoming calls are not very clear and even hard to hear unless the message leaver speaks loud and clear every time. Part of this problem is that the volume does not go up enough.

Also, when you get an incoming call while on the phone it not only beeps right during your conversation cutting off words, but also has a short ring right after the beep making it even longer and worse.

Because there were so many good ratings for this phone I returned it in exchange for another one of the same model in hopes that it is not a defective or cheap model but that it was just this one phone that has a problem. I will find out within the next day or so and hope to leave a follow up to this.

I was desperate to get a telephone system since I was housebound due to illness and needed a system immediately. Amazon was out of my disabled telephone system and I ordered this product since it was inexpensive and met my current needs. The product did not arrive and I learned it was delivered to the wrong address. I considered this an omen and canceled the order; however, it was delivered before I could get out to get another system; hence, i reinstated the order. The date and day are out of sync and the incoming calls usually have the telephone number but rarely have the name. Overall it does not meet the ease of use and quality of my previous system. I am disappointed but it was inexpensive. Should have stuck with my female intuition and canceled.
